Oscar Ribeiro Almeida Niemeyer Suarez Filho was born on December 15, 1907 in Rio de Janeiro. His family was of Portuguese-German descent and had six children.
His mother made sure that young Oscar held a pencil in his hands as soon as he could, after which Oscar never stopped drawing.
Niemeyer graduated from Barnabitas College in 1923 and received a degree in architecture in 1934 from the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro.
